Parent/Carer Notices for all Year Groups

11th September 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers

A great start back

At the end of everyone’s first full week, the College is now in full swing, and there have been many highlights.

  • At the end of the individual photographs taken on Tuesday, it was reported that every, single student in the College was ‘delightful and polite’ – a truly fantastic reflection of our student body and the culture we value.
  • Our new Year 7 students have been brilliant – working hard in their lessons, finding their way around, and making new friends (see photos below).  It was also a great  pleasure to welcome so many Year 7 parents to the Habits of Champions evening last night.
  • Students are also already building their confidence through being great learning leaders, talk partners and reflecting on where confidence comes from in their assemblies.
  • Teachers are working hard on establishing routines for total participation with their classes and it’s fantastic to see such lively and engaged lessons.

Celebrating Learning Plus

This week, we also  welcomed Mr Robin Pinfield, with his wife, Val, to celebrate the final completion of all of the Learning Plus improvements that have taken place over the past 18 months. Rob is a retired architect who had kindly volunteered his time and expertise to help us maximise the improvements in Block C.

“The new facility is a remarkable transformation and I was pleased to be part of the team that delivered the vision. It was marvellous also to hear the positive feedback from some of the students. You should all rightly be proud of what has been achieved – it’s very impressive and provides a first class learning environment for the community.”

A special well done to Haider S., Dory B. and Catherine CS, who brilliantly toured our visitors and explained the uses of all the different spaces (photos below).

Best wishes

Very Important: Safe Parking Practices Near Uckfield College

We have noticed a lot of traffic at the start and end of the day coming down the drive next to the College and also using the top car park, and this is causing potentially extremely serious situations. Ensuring the safety of our students, pedestrians, and other drivers is of utmost importance to us.

Alternative Parking Options:

We kindly urge you to consider using the nearby parking facilities:

Luxfords Car Park

Hempstead Lane Car Park

Both are just a short walk from the College  and provide a safer environment for everyone.

Please consider using the alternative car parks mentioned above. Please also adhere to Traffic Laws: avoid parking in ways that block driveways, pavements, or create visibility issues at junctions.

Please also be reminded that parents/carers are kindly asked not to drive down the Drive to drop students off or pick them up please unless there is an agreed medical reason for doing this.  With very large numbers of young people arriving and leaving at the same time, we respectfully ask that everyone plays their part in reducing the number of unnecessary vehicles in the area at these times.

We understand the challenges of College drop-offs and pick-ups and appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a safe and respectful environment for our community.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Year Group Photographs

Year Group Photographs: On Monday 14th September Tempest will take whole year group photos for Year 7 and Year 11. These photos will be available for purchase alongside the individual portraits.

Welcome Back to a New Year of Music-Making at Uckfield College - Mr Stewart

It is a true privilege to write to you as I formally introduce myself as the new Director of Music. Having seen our wonderful musicians perform last year in the college production, I was thoroughly inspired by the immense talent, dedication, and vibrant enthusiasm displayed by our students.

Joining such a creative community is an absolute honour, and I am keen to build on that strong foundation.

As we begin the new academic year, we want to hit the ground running. Music at Uckfield is open to everyone, and I am delighted to introduce our comprehensive super-curricular timetable for the term ahead. Our extra-curricular programme offers a wide array of opportunities to make, play, and enjoy music together, regardless of prior experience.

We are particularly excited to launch brand-new additions to our roster this year, including a a new Brass Group and a Steel Pans ensemble! All of our department ensembles will feature prominently across our concert and performance programmes throughout the year.

For further Information on all our super-curricular music please see the attached letter.

Responsible and kind use of social media - Mr Webster

With an ever increasing number of young people having access to technology and their own electronic devices, this brings with it the risk of a rise in the misuse of social media. To ensure a safe, calm, and distraction-free learning environment, Uckfield College operates a strict zero-tolerance policy on the use of mobile phones and smart devices on school grounds.

This approach aligns directly with official Department for Education guidance, which mandates that all schools in England remain mobile phone-free environments throughout the entire school day, including during lessons, breaktimes, and lunchtimes.

If any aspect of ICT is misused within the school or on our equipment we will identify and address this misuse. Fortunately, this type of misuse is incredibly rare and this is helped by the fact that students are not able to access any social media sites on our network.

Indeed, most of the inappropriate use of the internet is done from home or on students’ mobile devices during evenings, weekends and holidays. This makes it very difficult for schools to investigate and take action. Unfortunately, we are limited in our ability to control or sanction content posted online. We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that issues which originate outside of College do not negatively impact on the smooth running of our community. When issues do negatively impact our school, we will always address this as swiftly and thoroughly as possible.

The College does not hold additional sway with platform operators; our reports carry exactly the same weight as any individual.

The responsibility for monitoring a child’s use of social media, or indeed the internet in general, must lie with parents/carers. We strongly encourage you to discuss issues around this with your child. For reference, the minimum age requirement for major platforms is 13 years old:

Facebook (13+)

Instagram (13+)

WhatsApp (13+)

Snapchat (13+)

TikTok (13+)

We strongly encourage you to talk with your child about their online presence and the potential consequences of their actions—both online and in person.

While it may seem anonymous and impersonal, nothing posted online can ever truly be taken back. It is also important that students understand that anyone found participating in or encouraging inappropriate behaviour risks significant disciplinary consequences.

If your child is the victim of inappropriate use then we strongly recommend that you, as a parent/carer, report the matter to both the social media service and to the police.

However, to support you and your child the College will:

  • Continue, through PSHE and assemblies, to educate students of the dangers of inappropriate use of the internet
  • Continue to monitor the use of any form of ICT in normal school hours and the use of the school email system at all times, and will deal with anything deemed inappropriate
  • Refer anything that we believe could be defined as, or could potentially lead to, a Child Protection issue to the appropriate external agencies
  • Continue to support parents with advice on how to tackle inappropriate use either by their own child or others East Sussex Safeguarding Children Partnership

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in keeping our young people safe online and focused in College.

Changes to Free School Meals - reminder

As you are probably aware, the Free School Meals eligibility criteria will change from 1 September 2026, and the transitional protection rules will cease at the end of this academic year.

All families in receipt of Universal Credit will now qualify for free school meals. However, there will be two categories of benefits-based free school meals:

  • Targeted FSM– This will continue to be based on the existing threshold and will cover pupils from households receiving Universal Credit with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less. In addition to receiving free meals, pupils eligible for targeted FSM will attract pupil premium and other disadvantage funding for their schools.
  • Expanded FSM– This is a new category covering pupils who do not qualify for targeted FSM, but who are in households receiving Universal Credit. Pupils eligible for expanded FSM will receive meals only and will not qualify for pupil premium or other associated benefits.

What do I need to do?

My child currently receives Free School Meals and is in Year 7 to 10 and Year 12

From 1st June East Sussex County Council will be checking the eligibility of all students against the new criteria.  ESCC will only contact parents if they no longer meet the criteria for Free School Meals or to check personal data so please keep a look out for e-mails from them. Please DO NOT reapply as this will delay the process. They will not contact you if you move from Targeted to Expanded except in specific cases.

My child currently receives Free School Meals and is in Year 11

Your student’s Free School Meal eligibility will be cancelled at the end of the school year. If your student is rejoining our 6th form, please reapply using this link. If your student is joining another +16 education setting, please contact the admissions department of that school or college for information.

My child does not currently receive Free School Meals

If you believe your student may be eligible for Free School Meals under the Expanded FSM programme, please apply using this link.   from 1st June. Please DO NOT apply before then as your application will be rejected.

If you believe your student may be eligible for Free School Meals under the Targeted FSM programme, please apply using this link. at any time.

If you have any questions, please contact the finance team at finance.info@uckfield.college or the East Sussex County Council FSM team on Phone: 0300 330 9472 (10 am to 3 pm)

Drama Classes

We have a wonderful LAMDA tutor, Shauna, who comes into college once a week and offers 1-2-1 or paired tutoring sessions. The London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) is one of the world’s oldest and most respected drama schools, founded in 1861! Its exams are widely recognised and help students develop valuable life skills as well as gain qualifications. (For older students, LAMDA at grades 6–8 also carry UCAS points, supporting university applications).

We have some slots available for this term with our LAMDA drama tutor, who will be in school on Tuesday mornings, running 30-minute lessons. (Students leave their lessons to receive their tutoring, and have a rolling timetable of slots so that they don’t miss the same lesson every week.)

Please see the attached flyer for further information or email Shauna:  shauna@arielct.com

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Mission Transition Evening on Thursday 10th September. It was a real pleasure to meet so many of you. We hope you found it insightful to learn more about how we challenge and support our Year 7 students to reach their full potential, as well as how home and school can work together in positive partnership to best support your child’s journey into secondary school.

The evening began with a short presentation in the Theatre and Hall, followed by a series of 20-minute breakout sessions covering a variety of key transition topics.

For those who were unable to attend—or if you would simply like to review any of the materials covered—you can access the presentation slides through the links below. We are updating those slides related to home learning, as we have found an error in the timetable, and will reshare and publish next week.
