Parent/Carer Notices for all Year Groups
17th July 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers
Celebrating Success
As the academic year draws to a close, we are celebrating a wealth of student success. We have held six inspiring Awards Evenings for Years 7–12 to celebrate an incredible array of talent; in Years 7-10, we operate a biannual selection model for these events to ensure we involve as wide a range of deserving students as possible. These run alongside our regular Celebration Assemblies, where even more achievement is recognised. Students have also been busy spending their ‘Uckfield Qualities Shields’ at our new lunchtime ‘Shields Shop,’ and ChangeMakers participants enjoyed a well-deserved inflatable party. Finally, we have written to congratulate the many students who have earned high achievement points while maintaining a record of zero behaviour points.
Confidence Builders
Our development plan this year has been centred on building student confidence: confidence to attend regularly, participate fully in lessons and super-curricular activities, to be Learning Leaders, and to have the confidence to aspire for the future. We believe confidence grows from achievement and daily challenges in lessons and through super curricular. Throughout the year, students have responded brilliantly, and my recent meetings with Directors of Year confirm that this high level of aspiration has truly become the norm in the College. We have also prioritised enhancing our provision for learners with SEND, which has had a fantastic impact. We look forward to building on this success with exciting plans for the upcoming academic year.
“D has loved every moment of Year 7 and, thanks to the support, encouragement and positive environment you’ve all created, she has grown enormously in confidence and has fully embraced secondary school life.”
Warm weather again next week: PE Kit is an option
Due to the higher temperatures forecast, we are giving students in Y7-10 the option to wear their uniform PE kit to school on those days if they prefer. Normal school uniform regulations should otherwise be followed. If students decide they would prefer to wear their normal school uniform, they do not need to bring their blazer with them unless they wish to.
This will be the final Parent Notices of this academic year, and I would like to thank you sincerely for your support of the College, and wish you all a wonderful summer.
Best wishes
Sara Marshallsay
Principal
Sussex Cricket Breaking Boundaries Launch Day
On Monday 13th July, the official launch of the Breaking Boundaries project in partnership with the Sussex Cricket Foundation took place at Hove County Ground, the home of Sussex Cricket. As a hub school, Mr Sidwell was fortunate enough to speak alongside Sussex Cricket captain Tymal Mills to outline the implementation of the project at Uckfield College. As part of the event, our franchise team “Sussex Edge” comprising of 11 Uckfield College players had the opportunity to play a full T20 match at the oldest cricket ground in England!
For further details of the project see attached the official press release, Breaking Boundaries website and Mr Sidwell’s overview included in the impact report for Year 1.
PE Kit - Mr Webster
Many thanks for your continued support in ensuring our students have been wearing the correct Uckfield College PE kit during the recent warm weather.
As we approach the end of the academic year, it is entirely natural that many of our students have experienced growth spurts! Consequently, we have noticed that some PE kits—most notably PE shorts and skirts/skorts—no longer fit quite as they should.
To ensure all students feel comfortable, confident, and adhere to our uniform policy during practical lessons, we kindly ask you to check the fit of your child’s current kit.
The upcoming summer break provides an opportunity to review your child’s PE wear and purchase any necessary replacements. This ensures they can start the new academic year feeling comfortable and ready to participate.
To assist you when purchasing new items, please refer to the visual guide below which illustrates exactly how the Uckfield College PE kit should look and fit when worn correctly.
Shorts and skirts should be of an appropriate, practical length and fit comfortably for athletic movement.

Term 1 2026-2027
The College re-opens for:
- Staff on Wednesday 2nd September 2026
- Year 7, 11 and 12 students on Thursday 3rd September 2026
- Year 8, 9, 10 and 13 students on Friday 4th September 2026
We look forward to welcoming students back. They should be on site by 8.50am at the latest, in good time to start their first lesson at 9.00am.
Being on site by 8.50am - Mr Webster - reminder
At Uckfield College, we believe how a day starts sets the tone for a student’s entire day. To ensure every child begins their learning feeling calm, prepared, and supported, we are reminding students of the need to be on-site by 8:50am for a prompt 9:00am start.
Being on site for 8.50am offers your child several significant advantages:
- Arriving early allows students to catch up with friends and settle into the College environment, reducing the ‘rushed’ feeling that can cause feelings of being unprepared.
- By being on-site at 8:50am, students have the time to organise their equipment and ensure their uniform is correct and be seated in their lesson by 9.00am. This means that when the lesson starts at 9:00am, they are ready to learn immediately.
- Being on the College site earlier provides a useful window to ask quick questions about the day, or eat breakfast in the Refectory.
- By addressing any uniform issues at the main entrance, we ensure that Period 1 is dedicated entirely to teaching, making every second count.
- It minimises disruption, as arriving late can disrupt the learning of others and wastes valuable teaching time.
- The Psychology of Routines – establishing strong morning routines helps put logistics on “autopilot” for our students. By removing the stress of rushing or arriving late, we reduce their cognitive load, freeing them to focus entirely on learning from 9am.
Punctuality and Late Procedures
To maintain a positive and productive learning environment, all students must arrive at their Period 1 lesson in good time.
- Late to college detentions: Students who arrive at Period 1 after 9:00am without a valid reason will be marked as late on the register and will be issued a late to college detention.
- The “Green Slip” System: We understand that occasional emergencies or transport delays occur. If a student has a valid reason for being late, they must sign in at Reception. Staff will issue a green slip to the student; when presented to the teacher, this ensures the student is not marked as late and no sanction is issued.
We appreciate your support in helping your child aim for an 8:50am arrival to give them the very best start to their day.
Collection of Medication - reminder
At the end of the College year all medication that we hold for your child must be taken home and either you or your child should come to Reception to collect it before 12pm on Tuesday 21st July 2026.
Any medication not collected after that time will be disposed of.
College Official Photograph Days - September 2026
Individual Student Photos: On Tuesday 8th September every student will have their individual portrait taken. These will be available for purchase soon after.
Year Group Photos: On Monday 14th September, Tempest will return to take whole year group photos for Year 7 and Year 11. These photos will also be available for purchase alongside the individual portraits.
School Games Mark Success
We are delighted to announce that we, Uckfield College, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2025/26 academic year.
The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
We are extremely proud of our students for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.
As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.
We look forward to applying once again in 2027!

Being fully prepared for uniform in September - Mr Webster - reminder
At Uckfield College, we believe that positivity can be generated by taking pride in yourself, your environment, and your appearance. Our uniform plays a key role in maintaining high standards, encouraging a sense of equality, and building a positive team spirit where students feel a true sense of belonging.
As students travel to and from the College, they are highly visible ambassadors for our community. Therefore, we expect them to wear their uniform correctly at all times, adhering to the following clear appearance standards:
Trousers must be secured and worn at the natural waistline, entirely covering underwear and any base layers. Wearing trousers below the hip is not permitted, as it leads to visible underwear or shorts. Furthermore, layered gym shorts, jogging bottoms, or sports branding worn underneath school trousers are not permitted due to health, hygiene, and safeguarding concerns. Shirts must also be fully tucked in around the entire circumference of the waist.
It is clear that wearing trousers below the natural waistline causes frequent rips and forces families to continuously replace uniform items. Ensuring trousers are worn correctly at the waist helps prevent unnecessary damage and the time wasted in college, supporting students with broken trousers that they cannot wear.
Skirts must be worn at their intended length (nearing the knee) and must not be rolled up at the waistband. Skirts must not be deliberately altered so that they are higher than this.
Hair dye must be natural in colour; non-natural tones or vivid dyes are not permitted. Fake or colour varnished nails are not permitted.
Facial piercings and additional earrings beyond one pair of stud earrings in the earlobe are not allowed. We strongly advise that new piercings are completely avoided during the summer holidays, as they may not be fully healed by the start of term and cannot be worn at College.
Please use the time over the summer to ensure that there are no issues at the start of the new academic year, including the length of skirts, so that every student can focus on making a positive start. Students who attend College in incorrect or improperly worn uniform will face clear sanctions. This may include being placed in detention, Restore, or being sent home to change.
If you require any support with your child’s uniform, please contact their Year Team in the first instance. We are committed to working with families to ensure all students are set up for success.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
Childcare Sufficiency Survey (CSA) Autumn - Item from VSB
To help ESCC prepare the 2027 CSA Report, VSB are gathering feedback from childcare providers, parents and carers to better understand local childcare needs, demand and any gaps in provision.
They have asked that we share the Parent and Carer Survey with our families and encourage them to complete it by 10am on 7th August. Your feedback is vital in helping them plan and secure sufficient childcare places for children and families across East Sussex.
Changes to Free School Meals
As you are probably aware, the Free School Meals eligibility criteria will change from 1 September 2026, and the transitional protection rules will cease at the end of this academic year.
All families in receipt of Universal Credit will now qualify for free school meals. However, there will be two categories of benefits-based free school meals:
- Targeted FSM– This will continue to be based on the existing threshold and will cover pupils from households receiving Universal Credit with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less. In addition to receiving free meals, pupils eligible for targeted FSM will attract pupil premium and other disadvantage funding for their schools.
- Expanded FSM– This is a new category covering pupils who do not qualify for targeted FSM, but who are in households receiving Universal Credit. Pupils eligible for expanded FSM will receive meals only and will not qualify for pupil premium or other associated benefits.
What do I need to do?
My child currently receives Free School Meals and is in Year 7 to 10 and Year 12
From 1st June East Sussex County Council will be checking the eligibility of all students against the new criteria. ESCC will only contact parents if they no longer meet the criteria for Free School Meals or to check personal data so please keep a look out for e-mails from them. Please DO NOT reapply as this will delay the process. They will not contact you if you move from Targeted to Expanded except in specific cases.
My child currently receives Free School Meals and is in Year 11
Your student’s Free School Meal eligibility will be cancelled at the end of the school year. If your student is rejoining our 6th form, please reapply using this link. If your student is joining another +16 education setting, please contact the admissions department of that school or college for information.
My child does not currently receive Free School Meals
If you believe your student may be eligible for Free School Meals under the Expanded FSM programme, please apply using this link. from 1st June. Please DO NOT apply before then as your application will be rejected.
If you believe your student may be eligible for Free School Meals under the Targeted FSM programme, please apply using this link. at any time.
If you have any questions, please contact the finance team at finance.info@uckfield.college or the East Sussex County Council FSM team on Phone: 0300 330 9472 (10 am to 3 pm)
Sporting and Other Special Acheivements: Years 7 - 10 - reminder
We would love to hear about any sporting or other special achievements your child has accomplished outside of College this year, whether big or small.
If your child has achieved something they are proud of, please let us know by completing this Google Form. We’d love the opportunity to recognise and celebrate their success during our final Celebration Assemblies of the year.
Art of the Week
Look at this incredible, gravity-defying “cheese pull” mozzarella stick, complete with its own chopping board, created by two of our incredibly talented year 9 students Immy and Ohla!
Not only does it look good enough to eat, but it actually stands out from the wall and wobbles. Talk about taking 3D sculpture to the next level! The engineering behind this stretch is pure genius.
Photo of the Week
For their final project before the summer, Year 9 Photography students have been learning how to take portraits that capture their subject’s personality.
They’ve really grasped this opportunity to work outside of the classroom, with this stunning shot by Ollie DB particularly standing out!

The English Department: Year 8 into 9 - Setting - Mr Mahoney
I’m writing to inform you of an important update regarding how we structure English classes for Year 9 students. To best support every student’s learning journey, we are introducing a refined English class structure for the upcoming academic year.
Our approach considers current educational research and our commitment to providing an equitable and effective learning environment for all. This structure is designed to build a rich and inclusive classroom experience where every student can thrive.
Here’s how the Year 9 English class structure will work:
We will have eleven English sets in Year 9, divided into two populations, A and B, with five sets in the A Population and six in the B population.
- Sets 1 and 2 in both populations are our “top sets”.
- Sets 3 and 4 in both populations are our “middle sets”.
- Set 5 (in A Pop) and Sets 5 and 6 (in B Pop) are our “support sets”.
We believe this refined structure will allow us to provide tailored support and appropriate challenge for all Year 9 students, ensuring they continue to develop strong English skills.
