Parent/Carer Notices for all Year Groups

1st May 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers

The College has been brimming with the Arts this week, with some truly fabulous pieces produced by Year 11 in their GCSE Art exam, preparations for what I am certain will be a terrific Dance Show this evening, and ongoing rehearsals for our College Production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’.  We love the Arts at Uckfield College and it’s always inspiring to see the sheer quality and creativity in students’ work.

Positive feedback

Last week, we had a routine monitoring visit from our Local Authority External Adviser, who observed lessons, met with staff and students, and visited Learning Plus. I am very pleased to share with you that in her report she wrote:

  • The teaching seen was illustrative of the high expectations the school has and how

change has been successfully and consistently achieved. This is a real strength of the

school.

  • The work with focus departments is rigorous and effective.
  • GCSE projections remain strong with impact on the vulnerable groups.
  • Leaders work in a consistent and competent way to achieve these advances.
  • The work that has gone into SEND development overall and specifically within the

revamped resource areas do and will add value to pupils with SEND. It is a

significantly enhanced offer to the one available in the school at the last inspection.

  • The school is approaching the last term of the year in a strong position, having

achieved many of its priorities set out in September.

Wishing you a great Bank Holiday weekend!

Best wishes

Students shine at Trinity Theatre as part of the National Theatre Connections scheme

Last week, students worked backstage, rehearsed and performed their production of ‘Macbeth Macbeth Macbeth Macbeth Macbeth’ at Trinity Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, as part of the National Theatre Connections scheme.
Our students were commended for their enthusiasm and professionalism in the theatre and their performance in the evening was repeatedly described as ‘epic’.

They have worked so hard all year on their ambitious and creative show and they should all be immensely proud of themselves.

Update on Fidget Tools in College

Fidget tools can be a valuable aid for some students, offering a range of sensory support that can help with focus and regulation. However, to ensure a productive learning environment for everyone, it is essential that any tools used are discreet and safe. Specifically, noisy fidget tools can become distracting to others and gel or silicone filled ones can split and be dangerous, which is why we must maintain clear boundaries on what is permitted.

Here is a guide to the approved and unapproved fidget tools:

Suitable Fidget Tools:

We support tools that are silent, unobtrusive, and pocket-sized.

  • Worry Stones are our best recommendation as they are silent, unobtrusive, pocket-sized, and offer a range of sensory support.
  • Textured Plastic Fidgets are acceptable, as it is better to stick to textured plastic.

Unsuitable Fidget Tools:

Items containing gel or silicon or that make a noise will not be allowed in College from 4th May.

We have recently had incidents where these tools have split causing issues. Furthermore, recent safety research regarding their internal contents has highlighted several risks that make them unsuitable for the College environment.

Thank you for your support with this matter.

Photo of the Week

Our Year 10 photography students have made such excellent work this week that we couldn’t just pick one!

Students have been exploring how to use text creatively within photography, and Izzy and Chloe have demonstrated exceptional creativity and a graphic sensibility in these two pieces. Well done!

Art of the Week

A massive well done to Evie SD in Year 9 for this incredible acrylic painting of a jelly.

From the translucent glow to those perfect reflections, it honestly looks good enough to eat! Evie has captured the texture so well, we’re all feeling a little hungry just looking at it.

Year 7 and 8 Assessment Fortnight - Monday 11th May – Friday 22nd May - Mr Bradley

At the end of Term 5 we will hold formal assessments in most subjects for students in Year 7 and in Year 8.

The aims of the assessment fortnight are:

• To find out what your child knows and what they have remembered

• To identify to teachers where your child needs support

• To inform you of how your child is getting on

• To provide an opportunity for your child to practise revising

• To ensure that your child feels comfortable doing assessments

Information about assessment week will be shared with students in an assembly and through Google Classrooms and will then be discussed in PDT with Form Mentors.

  • Most subjects will have a formal assessment: English, maths, science, geography, history, French or Spanish, technology subjects and computing. Other subjects will use other assessment methods to review progress. Some RE classes will have their assessment in the week of Monday 4th May: their teachers will confirm the dates with the students.

  • Some assessments will be written tests, some will be practically based assessments.

  • All assessments will take place in the classroom during lessons with support from learning assistants

  • Assessments will be spread out over 2 weeks – the timetable linked here shows when the assessments will take place. This is a suggested timetable and may be changed by some teachers to fit in with their teaching. They will let the class know if this is the case.

  • Students who are absent for an assessment will take the assessment when they return.

  • The Year 7 assessments will cover knowledge learnt in Year 7 and from terms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

Teachers will:

  • provide students with revision lists or a revision sheet (via Google classroom) in the weeks running up to the assessment fortnight

  • explain in lessons everything students need to know

  • Arrange some revision in class or for homework before the assessment

  • help students to revise and get organised – there is no need to worry!

If, after receiving this information from the teachers, you have any questions please email your child’s class teacher. Your child’s form mentor, Pastoral Leader or Director of Year will be able to help with general enquiries

The next report informing you of your child’s performance will be sent home in late June.

IMPORTANT - ‘Take Your Child to Work’ Day for Year 8 - Tuesday 23rd June - Stephen Simmons - Deadline is 5th May

We are delighted to inform you that Tuesday 23rd June is Year 8 ‘Take Your Child to Work’ Day. This exciting opportunity will allow students to spend a day in a real workplace, accompanied by a parent/carer or an emergency contact listed on Arbor.

It will give the students valuable experience of the world of work, which in addition to preparing them in the long term for their entry into the workplace, will also prepare them for their Year 10 work experience. We hope that as many Year 8 students as possible will be able to accompany their parents/carers on this day.  There are also important dress rehearsals for the school production of Little Shop of Horrors on this day as well, unfortunately this means any Year 8 students involved in the school production will not be able to take part in the Take Your Child to Work Day as they must be in college for rehearsals on that day.

Many UK secondary schools successfully run similar initiatives, and feedback consistently highlights the positive impact on students’ confidence, motivation and understanding of the world beyond school. Drawing on best practice from these programmes, we believe this experience will offer our students a range of valuable benefits.

With all such days there are legal formalities that need to be followed. To this end, we would be grateful if you could complete the attached Google Form.

By completing this, you are stating that your child will be under your supervision or the supervision of a close family member during the day in question.

Students can only go on visits with parents/carers who are listed as contacts on Arbor and are required to be with their parent/carer at all times. It is the parent/carer’s responsibility to arrange the visit for their child, not the careers department, and the parents responsibility to get agreement from the employer and check the relevant insurance and risk assessments are in place.

Please see guidance from East Sussex County Council:

The approval and liability for this work placement does not sit with ESCC or the school, but the parent / carer needs to check with their Employer as to whether the supervised child can A) is permitted to be present at the work place and B) that there is adequate Liability insurance in place under the Employers own insurance to cover the activity. There may be some work placements unsuitable for an under 18.  The school or ESCC insurance would not cover this in any event and the employer / employee needs to ensure that there is adequate Public Liability insurance in place.

Obviously, you will have to acquire the permission of your employer to have your child with you on that day. Should this not be forthcoming or should there be another reason why you do not feel that your child should take part in this scheme, then please indicate this on the attached form and we will make an alternative provision for those students on the day, which will comprise of work related learning activities. The school needs to know in advance all students taking place in this activity so that attendance can be coded correctly. Any students not in school on that date that have not informed the school in advance of their placement will have an unauthorized absence. The deadline for completing the form is May 5th 2026.

We really hope that your child will be able to take advantage of this opportunity.

Yearbook and Prom information - reminder - Mr Prichard

Students can opt to buy a copy of the Year 11 Yearbook which will hold some wonderful memories of their 5 years at Uckfield College. The cost of this is approximately £18 and can be purchased directly through All YearBooks (not through parent pay) using the link that I will share in Term 5 when the yearbook is ready to print.  Both the hoodie and yearbook are optional items but are lovely keepsakes and normally very much desired by students.

The Year 11 Prom takes place on Thursday 25th June 2026 at the AMEX stadium and I anticipate that the whole year group will attend. Please note that the event is by invitation only, and students with poor behaviour may not be invited. This will include outstanding detentions and any antisocial behaviour in social times. In such circumstances we reserve the right to cancel a student’s invitation to the prom up to the date of the event.  The cost of the Prom this year is now confirmed at £62. This will be available on ParentPay from Monday 16th March and the deadline for this payment is Monday 1st June 2026. In cases of financial difficulty please contact the finance office to see what support we may be able to offer (finance.info@uckfield.college). This is a one off payment of £62, however if it is not possible for you to pay this in one go then payment options can be discussed by contacting the finance team as above.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Year Team.

Thorpe Park and Enrichment Week Activities - Monday 6th to Friday 10th July

During Enrichment Week, Year 12 will be taking part in a range of activities that will help them get ahead before they start their final year in September. The first day will be focused around preparing for MUNGA, our Model United Nations General Assembly day that takes place on the Tuesday of that week. There will be two days of careers and UCAS preparation where students will be given guidance to write their first draft personal statements or work on their careers research and CVs. There will also be a Year 12 Celebration Evening on Thursday 9th July.

After what we are sure will be a highly productive and hard-working week, we would like to reward students by taking them on a group trip to Thorpe Park on Friday 10th July.  We hope this will be a fun day and a celebration of what they have achieved this year.
